Hola todos!

Its Viernes Santos here and that means holiday for everyone and that most things are closed today. Fortunately the super mercado was open!

Even the disco/club was closed yesterday for Semana Santa.

Just had a really good Good Friday lunch with typical Bolivian food (a soup made of "zapallo" a big pumpkin (locro, corncobs (choclo) and a sweet corn pie with cheese (huminta). Typical food for today, since they do not eat meat. And Dutch apple pie that I made together with Jessy, another Dutch volunteer that stays at the house.

Now relaxing in the little interior terrace of the house. I was kind of sunbathing before and it was really hot. Now it is cloudy, but still warm. The weather is a bit weird here, yesterday in the evening it was cold and so much rain, so today I have a throatache and am with a little cold, but many people have that.

I am staying in a nice tranquil house here with a mother (Sylvia) and her son Fernando. Then there is Dutch guy Jessy, with whom I did the volunteering together and today Paul (an Englishman) came back here. Jessy will be leaving tomorrow. I will leave Sucre for La Paz on Tuesday. Bought my airplane ticket yesterday. By bus it's more then 20 hours...

For this weekend I have excursions planned and today is a relax day, although me and Jessy have been baking Dutch Apple pie this morning with cream, for the lunch. Later on we will go to the procession. Now it's siesta time and everyone is resting.

Rest of the week was nice. Effectively I only had 3 days of volunteering instead of the 5 planned, since Thursday and Friday were already holidays for Semana Santa. It's a pity, but what can you do? Maybe I will go there on Monday as well.

The volunteerwork was at a daycare center (Sayari Warmi) for children aged between 1,5 till 5, about 30/40 kids. The mothers of these children work and otherwise these kids would be locked up in the house. Here they receive breakfast and lunch and care and attention.

They are from poor families and some are really aggressive, kicking and hitting eachother hard (so had to be "angry" quite some times and tried to teach them that hitting eachother is not good) but very sweet as well and some really needed lots of attention.

On Monday I was brought there by someone from the school and then the microbes (all old buses from China) got a flat tyre and the remaining part we had to walk.

The other 2 days I went with Jessy, leaving the house at 8:15. We worked there till about 12, then bus back (30/40 minutes depending traffic, lots of traffic here and pollution, sometimes it smells just like Mexico DF). Then we went to the market to buy lunch and had lunch at home. In the afternoon I mostly went sightseeing, visited some nice musea and churches and just walked around town. Had some dinners outside house (there are even some restaurants here with Dutch owners where they have things like "stroopwafels", jenever and bitterballen on the menu) but also cooked at house.

On Wednesday we stayed longer at the daycare center and had lunch there as well. There was a farewell party for a nun who worked for the center and the children did a little dance. All dressed up! Some of the mothers came to watch and brothers/sisters and stayed for lunch as wel. Nice! Some carried their small baby's with them in a "cloth" at their back.

Yesterday (day off) I went to the government office and from there you had a nice view from a kind of tower over town. Then went to visit a friend of a friend (Philly) who works in restauration of the Casa de la libertad (a historical building where the Declaration of Independence was signed). Also visited that museum. Nice building! They were playing live classic music inside. Really nice!

Then went to the market to buy lunch and veggies from dinner and some flowers for in the house. Had lunch at home with Fernando and Sylvia and later I went to visit the convent of Santa Clara, which is still used by nuns, who never go outside. So some parts were closed. It was with a guided tour, really interesting and beautiful old paintings. At night I went out for some drinks with the guys (Jessy, Fernando and Paul). Nice.

What else? Oh they have people dressed up in zebra suits at the zebra crossings. Funny to see!
Will post some photos now, while enjoying some more sunshine!
In short, it's nice here and I am enjoying Sucre.

Enjoy your Easter weekend.

Love,
Chantal
